I am back with another boiled peanut recipe!

If you loved our Instant Pot Boiled Peanuts then you will love today’s Georgia Boiled Peanuts Recipe!

As a reminder, if you have never heard of boiled peanuts they are a classic southern snack that is usually found at farmer’s markets, roadside stands, fairs, festivals, and local convenience stores. They are made (just how it sounds) by boiling the peanuts in salty water for several hours. Then, after you have completed the boiling process, your peanuts end up tasting more salty and have a softer texture!

Boiled peanuts can be made with either salt or spices, depending on your preference. Today, I am making traditional boiled peanuts that are salty! You can jump down to the recipe card by clicking the button above or you can see scroll down to see our step-by-step process with photos. Regardless of what you do, I highly recommend that you read the Tips Section because I share some helpful information about storing the peanuts, your crock pot, and more!

BEFORE WE START COOKING OUR GEORGIA BOILED PEANUTS RECIPE, LET’S TALK ABOUT THE CROCK POT:

If you have seen my Instant Pot Boiled Peanuts, then you may already know that boiled peanuts can be made in a variety of ways depending on how much time you have and what appliances you have. For instance, boiled peanuts can be made on the stove in a large pot, in a crock pot / slow cooker, or an instant pot

In the market for a crock pot? We’ve had this one for NINE YEARS!!! It is a true workhorse!

I actually made boiled peanuts in an instant pot and absolutely loved it! You can see that recipe here! However, the traditional method of making boiled peanuts involves a crock pot, so I definitely wanted to give that a go, since I do love a good crock pot recipe!

Overall the recipe, compared to the instant pot, is almost the same except for the amount of water you use and the time you cook. Personally, I thought they both tasted VERY GOOD with the crock pot peanuts being a little bit softer. So, with that in mind, I think the deciding factor really comes down (again) to time and what appliances you have on hand.

For those who don’t have an instant pot or who just don’t want to deal with all the extra steps involved with an instant pot (like manual release, etc.), a crock pot is the way to go! This is because all you do is add the peanuts to the water with some salt and let them cook for 7 hours. Now, 7 hours might sound like a lot of time, but trust me it’s worth it, and it’s definitely one of those easy recipes that you can make and then ”forget about” the rest of the day!

INGREDIENTS:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 Pounds Raw Peanuts in Shell (you find these at your local grocery store)
  • ¼ Cup Salt
  • Water (you will want enough water to fill your crockpot)
  • OPTIONAL: any spice of your choosing! You can add items like garlic powder, red pepper flakes, onion powder, old bay, and creole seasoning. Two of our favorites are Tony Chachere’s and JO Seasoning (which is a local Maryland company – we put this on EVERYTHING)!!! If you DO add spices, check to see if they contain salt. If so you may want to cut down on the amount of salt you add to the crockpot.

ITEMS NEEDED:

TIME / YIELDS:

Prep Time: 10 Minutes

Cook Time: 7 Hours 30 Minutes

Rest Time: 30 Minutes

Yields: 2 Pounds of Peanuts

IMPORTANT PEANUT NOTE:

If you are new to boiled peanuts, then you may not know that boiled peanuts can be made with either raw peanuts or fresh green peanuts. The difference between the two is that raw peanuts are air-dried to reduce their moisture content, which makes them have a longer shelf life. Green peanuts, on the other hand, don’t have any of their moisture removed which makes their shelf life much shorter.

When it comes to today’s recipe, we used raw peanuts in the shell. This is important to note as cook time, soak time, etc. can change with the kind of peanuts you use. Due to that, I recommend sticking with raw peanuts in the shell however, you could try green peanuts if you wish.

HOW TO MAKE GEORGIA BOILED PEANUTS:

1. Sort through your peanuts and make sure there are no random pieces of peanut shell, debris, etc. Rinse the peanuts and then soak them in cold water for 30 minutes. Drain.

3. Cook on high for 7 ½ hours or until the desired softness level has been reached.

4. Test a peanut halfway through. You’re tasting the peanut for personal preference to see if it’s salty enough for you. If not, add more salt and stir.

Add more water to the crockpot if the water ever falls below the top of the peanuts.

5. Once the peanuts are at your desired level of softness, drain and enjoy!

TIPS SECTION:

Remember those important tips I was telling you about at the beginning of the post? Well, here they are!

  • The best storage for boiled peanuts is in an airtight container in the fridge. They will keep for up to a week if stored in this manner. Do not store in liquid, make sure they’re drained. Do not freeze.
  • At 7 ½ hours, the peanuts were pretty soft, which is how we prefer them. So, if you don’t like them that soft, cook them for less time. Each crockpot is different, so the cook time may vary.
  • ¼ cup salt is a great starting point, but everyone prefers a different salt level. So, be sure to check the saltiness halfway through so there’s plenty of time for the added salt to cook into the peanuts. If you don’t prefer very much salt at all, start with 1/8th of a cup.
