Learn how easy it is to create your own heart-shaped engraved plant pot, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
A flower pot with a beautiful flower can be the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day! However, it can also be one of the more expensive gifts, especially during this time of year!
So, if you are wanting to give a cute flowery gift but don’t want to spend a ton of money, then you will love our DIY! Today, I am going to show you how to make a custom-engraved plant pot that can be used to hold real flowers, a fake succulent plant, or just a ton of Valentine’s Day candy! {FTC disclosure: this post contains affiliate links which means I may make a small commission on sale – at no additional cost to you!}
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Rotary Tool – I used the Worx MakerX Rotary Tool
- Terracotta Pots
- Rust-Oleum 241526 Comfort Grip
- Rust-Oleum 2x Ultra Cover Spray Paint
- Painter’s Tape
- Folk Art White Paint
- Small Paintbrush
- Paint Pallet
- Heart Stencil (I used my Cricut to cut out a vinyl heart, but you could freehand your design)
HOW TO MAKE ENGRAVED PLANT POTS:
PAINTING PLANT POT:
1. Spray paint your terracotta pots with the color of your choice and set them aside to dry.
NOTE: Unlike a standard pot, terracotta needs to ”breath” to function the best when it comes to keeping plants alive. So, when painting, don’t spray paint the inside, and don’t spray paint over the drainage holes on the bottom.
ENGRAVING PLANT POTS:
2. Once your terracotta pots are dried, mask off the area where you want your design to be with some painter’s tape. Then add your design on top of the painter’s tape.
For this step, I used my Cricut to cut out a vinyl heart to create my stencil. However, you could use a sticker or freehand your design onto the painters tape itself. Also, you can use any simple shape that can be engraved, like a floral pattern or geometric shape.
When you have added your painter’s tape and stencil, you are ready to use your MakerX!
Grab your MakerX and slowly go around the edge of your stencil/pattern. As you are going around the edge of the stencil, the MakerX will be cutting your pattern into the terracotta pot.
Once you are completely done your terracotta pot will be dusty. Simply brush off the dust on the outside of the pot and you are ready for the next step!
PAINTING ENGRAVING:
4. Take your small paintbrush, dip it into some white paint, and paint the engraved edge that you created in step 3.
When painting the engraved edge, don’t worry about the paint being ”only in the engraved edge”. We will be removing our stencil and painter’s tape later, which means your painting doesn’t have to be perfect and you can paint over the stencil or painter’s tape.
5 When it comes to removing the stencil and painter’s tape, you have two options.
Option 1 is to remove the stencil and painter’s tape immediately after you have painted the engraved edge. Option 2 is to let your painted engraved edge completely dry, then remove the stencil and painter’s tape.
Personally, I went with option 1. However, no matter what option you pick, make sure you have a damp towel nearby so you can clean up any edges where the paint might have seeped through.
Once your terracotta pots are completely dry and the painter’s tape is removed, you are ready to fill up your pots with your favorite plants (real or fake)!
