This cheesy mashed potato recipe is the ultimate comfort food. It is the perfect side dish for a special occasion, holiday meal or simple weeknight dinners. It’s one of the best mashed potatoes recipes I’ve come across, and one of my favorite recipes that brings ordinary mashed potatoes to the next level. They are one of my most requested dishes to bring to a holiday dinner and these cheesy potatoes pairs well with any main meal.

This is one of my ultimate side dish recipes, because it  comes together quickly and is easily customizable.  Want to try something different? Add some fresh garlic or onion powder. Other great options to change things up are trying different cheeses for a different flavor profile. Some different kinds of cheese that would also work great are goat cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese or mozzarella cheese. Add in fresh garlic cloves and if you’re feeling extra fancy top with fresh chives, green onions or fresh herbs.

Looking for a main dish to pair with this delicious side dish? Try this maple glazed ham, shake and bake pork chops, or top round roast. Need other side dish ideas? Try air fryer green beans, and air fryer asparagus.

Cheesy Mashed Potatoes Ingredients

  • Potatoes – Yukon golds are my preferred potato for this recipe, but russet potatoes or red potatoes
  • Sour cream – this keeps the potatoes texture light, and fluffy, but you can also cream cheese but it will result in a denser texture
  • Half and half – this adds a creamy texture, but if you don’t have it on hand you can substitute whole milk or heavy cream
  • Butter – it wouldn’t be mashed potatoes without plenty of butter!
  • Shredded cheese –  Colby jack or cheddar work best, but use any that you prefer
  • Seasonings– You can add as much or as little to your preference, and the main ones that I use are salt and black pepper and garlic powder
