INGREDIENTS:
INGREDIENTS:
ITEMS NEEDED:
- Baking tray
- Parchment paper
- Pen or marker
- Piping bag
- Microwave or double boiler, to melt the wafers
TIME / YIELD:
Servings: 12 crabs
Preparation: 30 minutes
Setting time: 15 minutes
NOTES:
- Use any flavor or ”type” of Oreos that you like to make the crabs! For example, Regular, Double Stuf, Mega Stuf, etc.
- Don’t like the Golden Oreos? You can either use them as the sand or blend up another cookie like Nilla Wafers.
- If you don’t want to pipe on the crab legs, you can attach pretzel sticks, pieces of red licorice, or pieces of Pull n’ Peel Twizzlers.
HOW TO MAKE OREO CRABS:
CREATING COOKIE DESIGN
1. Take an Oreo and trace around it several times onto a piece of parchment paper. You will want the Oreo circles on the parchment paper to be spaced about 3-4 inches apart. Once you are done, toss out the cookie you used to trace with in case it has ink on it.
2. Draw 8 crab legs and then 2 claws on the front of the two legs onto the parchment paper.
3. Once you are done drawing your crab, flip over the parchment paper and place it on your baking tray.
CREATING CRAB LEGS
4. Place 1/2 cup of red candy wafers into a piping bag, twist it shut, then microwave it until it’s fully melted and smooth. When you microwave the red candy wafers you will want to make sure that you are on the low or defrost setting. Also, you will want to check on the bag every 30 seconds and massage it, so all your red candy wafers are evenly heated and melted.
When your red candy wafers are melted, set the bag aside to cool for about 3-5 minutes.
NOTE: Do not skip the step of letting your bag cool! This is because if you use it while it’s hot, the chocolate will spill out of the bag too quickly.
5. Cut the corner of your piping bag, then trace over the crab legs and claws on your parchment paper. Then set it aside to dry.
CREATING CRAB BODY
6. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the rest of your red candy wafers (again on a low or defrost setting) and stir until it’s smooth.
7. Grab a fork, place an Oreo cookie on top, and dip it into your bowl of melted red candy wafers. When your dipped Oreo is completely covered, lift it out of the bowl of melted red candy wafers and tap off any excess.
8. When the excess has been tapped off of your Oreo cookie, add it to your parchment paper with your crab legs.
Repeat this process with your other cookies, but I suggest working with small batches.
DECORATING CRAB OREO COOKIE
9. While the red chocolate on your Oreo is still melted, add red sprinkles on top. However, make sure you leave room for the candy eyes.
10. After your sprinkles have been added, place the candy eyes towards the front where the claws are.
NOTE: You can add some extra sprinkles behind the eyes to help them set up.
11. Allow your Oreo cookie to be completely set up before serving. If you want to speed up the process, you can put them in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes.
BONUS STEP:
If you have any leftover uncoated Golden Oreos, blend them in a food processor to make edible stand! If you decide to do this, remove the cream from at least half of the Oreos that way the sand is not overly wet.
STORING:
If you have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container (in a single layer) in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
I said it before, and I will say it again, how adorable are these Oreo Crabs?!! They are not only the easiest summertime treat to make (or Fall if you are a Marylander because it is PEAK CRAB SEASON HERE!!!) but would be so much fun to make with the kids!
Plus, imagine how cute these would be to serve at a beach-themed party, mermaid-themed party, or even a housewarming (if you live on the water)!
My love of decorating Oreos is growing quickly, so don’t be surprised if The Kingston Home becomes the place to be for Oreo recipes! If you make these Oreo Crabs, make sure you tag me on social media @thekingstonhome so I can see them!
